Moving to London
Marc, 30, London:
"It's... there's a shop, it's like on top of a shop. Its behind the main road. I'm not sure because I will be living with some people who I haven't known for so long. It will be a strange experience for me because I will have to share some things. I am not sure if all my stuff will fit into, like all my books."

A woman talking to a friend:
"... surely it's more expensive because of costs of turbines ... he literally does it from start to finish ... all those materials ... it does make for some beautiful diagrams ... you have lost me there. As soon as you mention the word mathematics. ... This is the sort of thing that I need to ... aren't people who are dealing with this kind of thinking ..."

British Library, London
An old university friend I ran into:
"I kind of like the idea of travelling round the world fathering illegitimate children on a host of women and then having an independent letter writing existence, so I could just receive letters from them.
"And then being able to have a huge reunion where they all get to meet me at the same time, possibly when I am in my 60s and dying of cancer.
"The relationships would be brief but extremely loving and meaningful."

Andi Snelling, 26:
"I have a housemate from Brazil, she applied for a post-study visa just as I did [...] There she was at the kitchen table and she was opening this parcel with her visa in it and actually it made me cry.
"My mum is entitled to an Irish passport but I am not because you have to have a parent or grandparent born in the UK to get a passport. My mum can but I cannot, because I was born one generation too late."

Girl on phone:
"I'll have to get off this one[...] Problem at[...] S is annoyed, but there's nothing I can do about it[...] So I've emailed R, so hopefully that's alright."

Two guys at the back of the bus:
"Whatever he snorts, I can snort him under the table[...] I was in Doncaster recently[...] Hour-and-a-half drive and hour-and-a-half train ride[...] Your friend still lives in Cambridge, right? It's a lovely place[...] If you've not got anything planned[...] I've got to go. Right, I'll see you tomorrow."

Cromar, Norfolk - Factory work
Samuel León, 28, Manchester:
"In Spanish I would be more precise because Spanish comes from my heart and I could find a precise word for every feeling I felt when I was 19.
"They used to get us up every morning at 6.30 and take us to the factory. All of us were foreigners; Polish, Spanish, Portuguese. We had to put on these horrible suits because it was minus five degrees. I used to work in this big room. It was like minus ten. What I did was I took the meat out of the crabs, and that was really, really disgusting.
"I came to England with mt ex-girlfriend and three friends of mine. It was not a very good time but at the same time I realised when I finished work my life could not be so simple. The working conditions were not very good so that made me think about my life and made me grow up. I think that factory is a turning point in my life."

Snippets of conversation on the bus:
"Tell her on facebook [...] She just needs a job where she gets paid [...] One of them usd to be manager at Gucci in Selfriges [...] If you have the motivation [...] But, like, if that, like [...] I wouldn't mind it but you would get bored after a while [...] Why did the worst girl get it? [...] I like the blonde one [...]"
Friend I am staying with:
"I think music - ok I'll give you a quote - most people say that language of music is defined by the composer, but I think that music is about sound. If you want to give it musical names call it pitch, or scientific call it frequency, [...] rhythm [...] duration. Therefore there is a common ground between all composers because all music is about those things."
